Dortmund, Bayern Munich and the Siren Song of Yesterday
  + stars: | 2024-05-03 | by ( Rory Smith | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
In those few minutes after Niclas Füllkrug had scored, as the Yellow Wall swayed and roared, Borussia Dortmund must have felt the stirring of some distant memory. Waves of attacks pounded down on Paris St.-Germain, now dizzied and wearied. This is how it used to be, or at least some approximation of it, back in the days when Dortmund made Europe shake. More than a chance, really: Dortmund may live to regret that a second goal never came. had enough opportunities to hint at its threat, too, hitting the post twice in the space of 10 seconds at one point.

NEWCASTLE, England, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund rekindled their hopes in Champions League Group F with a gritty 1-0 victory at Newcastle United thanks to Felix Nmecha's clinical first-half strike on Wednesday. Nmecha's well-taken goal near the end of a high-octane opening half proved enough for the Bundesliga side to post their first win in the group at the third time of asking. The two sides will meet again in a fortnight in Dortmund in a match that is likely to be pivotal. Nmecha's first Champions League goal at the end of a high-octane opening half was Dortmund's first in the competition this season and ultimately it proved decisive. Dortmund stifled Newcastle after that but needed some luck in the dying minutes to go home with the points.

Dortmund crush Wolfsburg 6-0 to stay a point behind Bayern

DORTMUND, Germany, May 7 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund demolished hapless VfL Wolfsburg 6-0 on Sunday, with two goals apiece from Karim Adeyemi and Jude Bellingham, to stay hot on the heels of Bundesliga leaders Bayern with three games left in the season. Dortmund are now on 64 points, one behind Bayern, 2-1 winners against Werder Bremen on Saturday. "We are satisfied today but a long way from happy," said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic. Dortmund host Borussia Moenchengladbach next Saturday while Bayern take on Schalke 04. Instead it was Dortmund who struck again in the 28th when Adeyemi delivered a pin-point assist for Sebastien Haller to tap in.
DORTMUND, Germany, April 22 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund cruised past Eintracht Frankfurt 4-0, with two goals coming from Donyell Malen, on Saturday to take over the lead in the Bundesliga from Bayern Munich with five matches left in the season. For Frankfurt, last year's Europa League winners, it was their eighth league game without a win and they dropped to ninth, out of contention for a European spot. Jude Bellingham opened Dortmund's account in the 19th minute after picking up the ball at the edge of the box, turning on the spot and firing in. Their second goal, five minutes later, was far easier, with keeper Gregor Kobel kicking the ball deep in to the Frankfurt half and Malen slotting in after the ball was headed on twice past a clueless Frankfurt backline. Mats Hummels made it 3-0 with a well-timed header from a Raphael Guerreiro cross before Karim Adeyemi's solo effort set up Dutch striker Malen for his second goal of the evening in the 66th.
Whirlwind Bayern crush Dortmund 4-2 to go top in Tuchel debut

MUNICH, Germany, April 1 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich overran a hapless Borussia Dortmund to win Der Klassiker 4-2 on Saturday as three goals in the opening 23 minutes helped them reclaim top spot in the Bundesliga and hand new coach Thomas Tuchel a winning start. With Tuchel, who also coached Dortmund from 2015-2107, having replaced Julian Nagelsmann on the Bayern bench, the hosts were all over their title rivals from the start. With Dortmund's defence torn to shreds and club bosses frozen in their seats at the Allianz Arena, Bayern never took their foot off the gas. Some sloppy finishing, however, saw them squander half a dozen golden chances in the second half before Dortmund struck twice late in the game, with an Emre Can penalty in the 72nd minute and a stoppage-time effort from Donyell Malen. Tuchel, who previously also coached Paris St Germain and Chelsea, could not have dreamt of a better start with Bayern on course for a record-stretching 11th league crown.
Feb 16 (Reuters) - Chelsea forward Kai Havertz said he was encouraged by the way the club's new signings are gelling with the team despite the side recording only one win in 2023. Since manager Graham Potter took over in September Chelsea have scored only 25 goals in 24 games and managed only three in their last eight. Last month's 1-0 Premier League win over Crystal Palace remains their only victory in nine games this year. "I don't think we should be too unhappy with our performance because we created the opportunities, but it's just frustrating that we couldn't take any of them," Havertz said. LEVERKUSEN, Germany, Jan 29 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund cruised past hosts Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 on Sunday for their third win in three league matches since the Bundesliga resumed after the winter break, climbing to within three points of the top spot. Goals from Karim Adeyemi and a second half own goal from Edmond Tapsoba gave Dortmund a comfortable victory and snapped Leverkusen's five-game winning run in the Bundesliga, dropping them to ninth place. "Today it was not only an important win but also a deserved one and this is something we liked. "This win won't mean much if we don't keep at it and keep delivering the same performances," Terzic said. Germany international Adeyemi rifled in his first Bundesliga goal after a good passing move from Dortmund in the 33rd minute with Leverkusen's Moussa Diaby having earlier forced a superb save from Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel.
DOHA, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Switzerland reached the World Cup knockout phase for the third straight time after prevailing 3-2 over Serbia on Friday to finish runners-up in Group G and set up a last 16 showdown with Portugal. But Switzerland resolutely saw out the win, and finished second in Group G behind Brazil on goal difference. Switzerland have now reached the last 16 of every World Cup and European Championship since 2014 and will meet Group H winners Portugal on Tuesday for a place in the quarter-finals. Serbia, who needed a win to give themselves a chance of advancing, finished bottom of the group with only one point. They have never moved past the World Cup group stage since the break-up of Yugoslavia.
Gladbach crush Dortmund 4-2 for second straight defeat

BERLIN, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Borussia Moenchengladbach fired four goals past hapless Borussia Dortmund for a 4-2 victory on Friday to leave their opponents in sixth place following their second straight league loss. Gladbach, who have now won six of their eight home games so far, are in seventh place on 22 points, three behind Dortmund. Jonas Hofmann, fresh from his Germany World Cup squad inclusion, slotted in for the lead after four minutes before Julian Brandt, another World Cup-bound Germany international, drew the visitors level. Dortmund pulled a goal back with Nico Schlotterbeck's volley on the rebound but the Ruhr valley club were badly leaking at the back. Thuram should have added at least one more goal but he missed a string of golden chances as Dortmund faltered.
CNN —‘Tis the season for wall charts and fans gathering around to pick their starting teams for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. “It’s always difficult when a guy helps you get to the World Cup, he scores three goals in World Cup qualifying and isn’t going to be a part of the program. Again, it’s more about who we did add that we felt good about.”All but one of the 26 will be making their World Cup debut at this year’s tournament and, according to the USMNT, it will be the youngest team to qualify for the World Cup. DORTMUND, Germany, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund drew 0-0 with already-qualified Manchester City on Tuesday to book their spot in the Champions League knockout stage with a game to spare. "We played much better in the second half. In the first half we conceded some balls and lost some counter-attacks," said City coach Pep Guardiola. "We finally rewarded ourselves against City with the point today," said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic. I have seldom seen a City game where they had so few chances."
